Lose yourself in Loreto

With winter approaching you don’t usually envision perfect weather and outdoor activities such as whale watching and kayaking, unless you are traveling to the Baja coast.  A beautiful spot is Loreto, a serene alternative to the more crowded and developed destinations found along the peninsula.  This town has grown to house a couple dozen inns and eateries, while maintaining the same romantic fishing village atmosphere.  By December you will be able to check into lodges or luxury home rentals.

Loreto

The Loreto Bay Company is building an 8,000 acre residential complex that will start offering one-bedroom units for $199 a night.  They will also put longer-term rentals on the market that can be rented for a minimum of six months.  All guests will have access to a pool, beach, watersports, and restaurants and massage services at the nearby Inn at Loreto Bay.

Starting in December, and when staying in Loreto, you can go to the town’s 18-hole golf course, which was redesigned by British Open champ David Duval, and the rest of the course will open fall of 2008.  You can also use the nine courts at the Loreto Tennis Center, which is being upgraded and is reopening at the end of the year.

                                         Panga

There are also many outdoor activities in Loreto to please anyone.  Sport fishing is a large attraction, and fishing excursions can be arranged on yachts, cruisers or family boats.  You can also go on the panga any time of the year, where you can take a half-hour ride to Coronado Island to swim, snorkel and kayak.  And if you’re lucky you may see the sea lions or dolphins that swim throughout these waters.  And as one of the main attractions, whale-watching is best December trough March, when the whales travel to Baja.
