Dubai: The New Golf Destination
Apr 11th
When you think ‘Golf destination,’ you probably picture green grass everywhere and beaches left and right, but think again. In the Arabian Desert you will find one of the most popular golf destination today, in Dubai. They work hard to beat the heat and desert sands to keep the golf courses green and beautiful, but they succeed tremendously. With temperatures that soar above 100 degrees in the summer, you wouldn’t expect Dubai to be one of the world’s top golf destinations, but they have achieved those ranks, and list that on their list of accomplishments, along with world’s tallest building, and world’s first seven-star hotel. This city is covered in skyscrapers, and now championship golf courses.

There are seven golf clubs that call Dubai home, and more on their way. Some of the most popular are: Emirates golf Club, which was one of the first golf clubs in Dubai, and is home to the Dubai Desert Classic tournament, and features two courses, one of which, the Majilis Course, is 7,211-yards big and includes 18-holes; and the Montgomerie Dubai, designed by Colin Montgomerie, with 18-holes, 265 acres, 14 lakes, 81 bunkers, a golf academy and a 21-room boutique hotel. Scheduled to open in March is The Dunes, designed by Ernie Els, which will feature an 18-hole course on its 7,538 yard link-style residence, along with a golf academy and about 900 luxury villas and townhouses that will be built around the course. Scheduled to open this or next year, Fire, Earth, Wind and Water are four courses at the Jumeirah Golf Estates, designed by the likes of Greg Norman, Sergio Garcia, Pete Dye and Vijay Singh. And the most anticipated to open is Tiger Wood’s first golf course, Al Ruwaya, set to open in 2009, and will feature a 7,700-yard, par-72 course, a golf academy and 320 villas, and will be open only to members and guests of the 80-suite boutique hotel.
